Lead User Research for Breakthrough Innovation
Before the Lean Startup® method took the business world by storm, there was a customer-centered innovation movement, known as “Lead User Research,” which helped companies like 3M create radically innovative products and services by tapping into “lead users.” The term “Lead User,” as coined by Eric von Hippel at MIT, refers to those people who are way ahead of the customer curve, more advanced than even early adopters, who invent solutions that companies have not yet thought of to satisfy their extreme needs. Ivy Eisenberg’s article, “Lead User Research for Breakthrough Innovation,” which appeared in the January 2011 issue of Research-Technology Management, gives an overview of the method and brings everyone up to the present by discussing where and how Lead User Research is being practiced throughout the world today.
